Rolling Horizons



Rolling Horizon appointments are fixed term appointments that are extended daily for the term specified in the letter of appointment.  The term may be for one or more years.  These appointments are appropriate to recognize the more than satisfactory contributions of academic staff members whose activities are integral to the department or unit’s mission.  The term of the rolling horizon appointment may be increased or decreased at any time.  A rolling horizon appointment may be changed to a different type of fixed term renewable appointment upon written notice to the employee; see ASPP 2.01 (1)(b).  An employee with a rolling horizon appointment, regardless of the term, is entitled to 6 months notice of non-renewal for funding loss.

For Rolling Horizon appointment requests, please provide:

  1. Individual’s name
  2. Appointment title, and years of service in the department and college
  3. Source of funding for the position and whether it is likely to continue for the duration of the rolling horizon
  4. Explanation of how the position is an integral part of the department’s continuing mission
  5. Draft letter to employee (See sample letter)

After consultation with the Assistant Dean for Budget and Finance, the Dean and the appropriate Associate Deans, the Office of Human Resources will notify the Department of the decision.
