Nonrenewal and layoff actions should be considered carefully by the employing units with the goal of providing as much notice as possible to the employee. CALS HR is available to assist employing units in determining whether layoff is appropriate and to assure they are following the ASPP procedures. Nonrenewal and layoff of academic staff members at UW-Madison are governed by the Academic Staff Policies and Procedures (ASPP), Chapters 3 and 5. Both nonrenewal and layoff of academic staff members in CALS require prior review and written approval from CALS Human Resources before notice can be given to the employee. The requirements for notice and reasons for nonrenewal and layoff depend on the individual’s type of appointment and the number of years the individual has been employed as an academic staff member at UW-Madison.
