Definitions of AS Appointment Types

Fixed term-renewable- This is an appointment for the period of time specified in the letter of offer. The typical contract period is one year. The appointment renews for the same period of time upon the expiration of the period, unless a nonrenewal notice is issued prior to the end of the contract and with the required notice period. See ASPP 2.01(1)(a). Example: An "annual fixed term renewable contract" renews for one year terms; a "two year fixed term renewable contract" renews for two years.

Fixed term-rolling horizon- (Rarely used for initial appointment.) This appointment is for a specifically stated term that is extended daily for the length of the term and is typically used to provide greater job security after a period of employment. The rolling horizon automatically renews every day and entitles the employee to the full period of the appointment upon notice of nonrenewal. See ASPP 2.01(1)(b).

Fixed term-terminal- This appointment carries no expectation of continuing employment. The period of employment and end date must be specified in the letter of appointment and the letter MUST state that the appointment will not continue beyond the end date specified. Absence of this statement may result in automatic renewal of the appointment at the end of its term. See ASPP 2.01(1)(c).

Indefinite appointment- (Not used for initial appointments). This appointment grants permanent employment, under the conditions set forth in ASPP. The percentage of the appointment cannot be changed without the consent of the academic staff member. An indefinite appointment can be made only where the dean or director can assure long-term funding. See ASPP 2.01(2).

Probationary- (Rarely used because of "up or out" provision.). This is an appointment with a probationary period of up to seven years leading to a review and decision on the granting of an indefinite appointment. Failure to receive an indefinite appointment results in nonrenewal of the individual and he/she may not be reappointed to a fixed term appointment in the same operational area. Exceptions may be made by the Chancellor. Initial probationary appointments require approval of the Dean, through the Office of Human Resources. See ASPP 2.01 (3).
