CALS Policy on Post-Retirement Employment

  1. Post-retirement employment must meet the needs of the department and fall within the normal scope of College activities (e.g., teaching, advising, research, service, and outreach).

  2. The initial post-retirement appointment period shall not exceed two years and may be identified with a terminal date. There is no limit on the percent of the appointment up to 100 percent. The salary for instructional duties will be based on courses taught, enrollment in those courses, student advising, management of out-of-classroom learning programs, and other duties. For other responsibilities, the percent shall be determined by the Dean upon recommendation of the unit's Executive Committee. Reappointment shall be contingent upon satisfactory performance, funding, and departmental need. Following the initial post-retirement appointment, positions will be reviewed on an annual basis. A continuation of the appointment will require Dean's approval.

  3. Salaries may be set at the pre-retirement rate. However, it may be set at a lower rate depending upon the responsibilities of the appointment.

  4. The executive committee (or its equivalent) shall recommend the terms of the appointment (e.g., salary, percent time, duration of appointment, job responsibilities, course selection, etc.) to the Dean.

  5. Financial resources must be available to support the position.

  6. There is an initial waiting period of 30 days following retirement before a post-retirement appointment can take effect.

  7. Questions regarding this policy may be directed to the Executive Associate Dean (2-9812), Associate Dean for Administration (2-9812), or the Director of Human Resources (2-3337).
