Q & A for Emeritus Status

Q: How are Emeritus Titles determined?

A: Emeritus status is an honorary status, attached (so to speak) to the title/position from which they retire. The only official existing titles with Emeritus attached are for legal faculty --Professor Emeritus, Associate Professor Emeritus, and Assistant Professor Emeritus. These have title codes and may be used for re-employed annuitants.

Q: What is the procedure for follow up after the request is submitted to HR?

A: After the request is submitted to HR, it will be approved by CALS HR Director and then by CALS Dean's office. The request and attachments will need to be in CALS HR office by Monday to ensure approval at the following weekly Dean's Executive Committee Meeting.

After it is approved in CALS Dean's Office, it will be forwarded to APO. APO will enter the status into IADS. You can check the status in APDT "as of" retirement date. "EMER" will appear in the upper right hand portion of the screen. That would mean that it has been received by APO and the process has begun. (This may take a couple of weeks).

Q:How long does it take once it is received in APO?

A: It can take up to two months. If you have an urgent request or have been waiting for a long time, contact Susan in CALS HR for follow-up.

Q: If the retiree does not request Emeritus Status, how do we get a retirement certificate?

A: You may request the regular retiree certificate/s for all retirees, including those who will be emeritus (It takes a long time for the Emeritus Certificates to be completed and they will be mailed to the retirees home). This is done online and may be requested by the department or the CALS HR office.
