Review of Contract for Renewal- Tenure Decision
- Criteria for tenure review must be developed by the department Executive Committee and given to probationary faculty member upon appointment. (FPP 7.14(D)
- Copy of the tenure criteria and a description of how they were applied to the candidate shall be forwarded with a departmental recommendation for tenure. (FPP 7.14 D)
- Procedures for review are same as those for review of renewal of contract. (FPP 7.15)
- Positive department recommendation: forwarded to dean (FPP7.15A)
- Department should allow 5 work days for Dean's office to review packet for completeness and to prepare a cover memo to send to the Divisional Executive Committee (CALS policy)
- Negative department decision: reconsideration and appeal process as described above if the result is nonrenewal of contract (FPP 7.10A)
- Dean consults with Divisional Executive Committee upon receipt of department recommendation (FPP 7.15B)
- Dean has the decision making authority; Divisional Committee is advisory.
- Dean prepares transmittal letter to the Divisional Committee; Department attaches letter to necessary copies of "dossier" and delivers dossiers to the Divisional Committee. (CALS policy)
- Divisional Committee provides advice to Dean
- Negative advice:
- Dean notifies Department Exec. Comm.
- Department Exec. Comm may request a meeting with the Divisional Exec. Comm (FPP 7.15 C)
- Div. Exec. Comm. will take a new vote (FPP 7.15 C)
- If advice from Divisional Committee upon reconsideration is still negative :
- Dean makes decision
- If dean's decision is positive , dean must forward to the provost a statement explaining the reasons for not accepting the Divisional Exec. Comm. recommendation (FPP 7.15 D2)
- If dean's decision is negative , dean must inform department (FPP 7.15 G)
- Department may request a statement of reasons
- Dean provides statement within 20 days
- Department may seek reconsideration by dean
- If dean's decision is negative , may be appealed to the Committee on Faculty Rights and Responsibilities if result is nonrenewal of appointment
- Positive advice from Divisional Committee
- Dean makes decision
- If dean's decision is positive , dean transmits approval to the provost with all supporting material and documentation and advice from the divisional committee. (FPP 7.15D1)
- Dean also informs department and faculty member
- Dean signs form from the Secretary of the Faculty
- If dean's decision is negative , see III (D)(2)(c) above
- Provost's Role
- Where the dean forwards a positive recommendation despite the negative advice from the Divisional Committee, the Provost shall consult with the Divisional Committee and the Dean (FPP 7.15 H)
- Where the provost makes a recommendation contrary to that of the dean (i.e. negative ), he/she shall consult with the dean. (FPP 7.15 H)
- The faculty member or the department may request a statement of reasons within 20 days (FPP 7.15 K)
- Faculty member or department may request reconsideration by Provost (FPP 7.15 K)
- If decision is negative, may be appealed to Committee on Faculty Rights and Responsibilities if result is nonrenewal of appointment (FPP 7.15K)
- Chancellor/provost notifies faculty member and department when the Board of Regents has approved tenure.
