Policies on Faculty Sabbaticals

  • CALS participates in the University's faculty sabbatical leave program and must follow University policies established for that program. The policies outlined here are intended to supplement those covered in the guidelines issued annually by the University . Sabbatical leaves are for activities that will enhance teaching, course and curriculum development, or conducting research or other scholarly activities that will enhance instructional programs within the field of expertise of the faculty member.

  • Included in University policies is a rule that CALS wishes to stress: Faculty who receive sabbatical leave must spend one full year on the campus after the leave is completed and must be more than two years from planned date of retirement following the sabbatical period. The College interprets "one full year" as a 100% appointment (or the faculty member's normal tenure commitment percentage appointment ) and at the faculty member's normal appointment basis (A or C).

  • If faculty request sabbatical for one academic semester, (C appointment) or 6 month (A appointment), and request is approved, CALS will pay 100% of the faculty member's salary for that period.

  • If a "full year" sabbatical (12 months for A basis or nine months for C basis) is requested, CALS will pay 65% of the faculty member's salary for that period. The faculty member is encouraged to arrange for the remaining 35% of salary support to be paid from other appropriate sources, such as gifts or grants, in order to provide for a sabbatical at full salary for the year.

  • Regardless of the sabbatical's duration or support, CALS expects the faculty member's department to cover his/her teaching and other responsibilities without financial help from CALS. The detailed plan for covering the faculty member's duties must be covered in the proposal documentation submitted to the Dean's Office.

  • Faculty are encouraged to take sabbaticals at locations outside of the UW System. For example, assignments at major research institutions are encouraged as well as international assignments, including those in developing countries.

  • Salary savings revert to the College.
