HHMI and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation are collaborating on a new program to support highly promising scientists from a range of disciplines relevant to plant sciences research. HHMI and GBMF will select up to 15 HHMI-GBMF investigators who have led independent laboratories at one of the approximately 200 U.S. medical schools, universities, and research institutes that are eligible for this competition (UW-Madison is eligible). Those selected will receive five-year appointments to HHMI and substantial research support while remaining affiliated with their home institutions. The purpose of the Program is to provide at least five years targeted support to academic researchers working in the plant sciences in the United States in a manner than (a) increases fundamental knowledge in plant biology, (b) enables the potential transformation of the field of plant science, (c) encourages top scientists to enter the field, and (d) attracts additional support for the field. Eligibility: 1)A doctoral degree 2)Tenured, tenure-track or equivalent position at an eligible U.S. institution with a rank of assistant professor or higher 3)First appointment as assistant professor or equivalent no later than December 31, 2006 4)Principal investigator on one or more active, national, peer-reviewed research grants that provide at least three years of support
