The National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) has embarked on a nationwide effort focused on the prevention and treatment of childhood and adult obesity. NICHQ is leading a consortium of organizations1 to establish the Collaborate for Healthy Weight program funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) with support from the Affordable Care Act Prevention and Public Health Fund. Collaborate for Healthy Weight’s mission is to promote positive community, primary care, public health and individual change to reverse the obesity epidemic in the context of advancing health equity. Our vision is to facilitate the development of community-based, multi-sector teams bringing together primary care, public health and other community sectors to prevent and treat overweight and obesity at individual and population levels. A key initiative is the Healthy Weight Collaborative, a two-phased national quality improvement program to apply evidence-based interventions and promising practices to prevent and treat obesity in children and families. Phase One of the Collaborative is currently underway.
