Characteristics of a CALS Education
Practical Experience
CALS has a century-long tradition of creating practical solutions to real-world problems. Our students have a passion to make a difference in the world – whether it means asking basic questions about genes and microorganisms or applying biological principles to working lands. That's one reason why CALS grads are so successful in the job market: 87 percent of CALS graduates with full-time jobs are working in fields directly related to their degrees.
Hands-on Learning
CALS students explore the living world through hands-on projects and self-initiated discovery, fostering their curiosity, creativity and leadership ability. According to one recent national survey, 50 percent of CALS graduating seniors have worked directly on a research project with a faculty member outside of class, highest among all UW-Madison schools. CALS students participate in independent study, internships and study abroad programs at higher rates than their peers.
Integrates Research and Education
Receiving an education through CALS allows students to explore opportunities in top-notch research facilities at one of the top public research universities in the country. CALS covers a wide spectrum of academic fields, mixing science and technology with social issues. In our ever-changing world, mixing these disciplines is a must, and at CALS, students are ahead of the curve.
Small College Feel in a Large Respected Research University
CALS is at the intersection of almost every college on campus. This allows CALS to continue to serve students with smaller class sizes and a more personal interaction with professors, while at the same time, students may work with other departments on campus whether through research, working with new technologies or sharing information.
