Milk prices continue to show improvement. The October Class III price was announced at $12.82 per hundredweight, up $0.71 from September. While much lower than the October price of the last 2 years, this is $0.50 per hundredweight higher than October 2006. The October Wisconsin all-milk price was $14.40. Read the rest of this entry »

Six CALS students with a variety of backgrounds were chosen to attend the 2009 Agriculture Future of America (AFA) Leaders Conference in Kansas City, MO November 5-8. With the support of industry leaders, AFA is able to provide career development training to men and women that share three characteristics – talent, passion and commitment to a career in agriculture, food and science. The bidding will begin on Monday, November 16th!
To make this event a success, we need your help in donating items to be put up for bid. These can include handiwork, services, or anything else you would be willing to offer! Examples of received donations include: physics tutoring, babysitting, massages, baked pies, personal training, and framed photographs.

The Forestry Club will be holding their 33rd annual Christmas tree sale December 4-6 in the UW-Stock Pavilion. Tree species include Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, White Pine as well as Fraser Fir Wreaths. Proceeds from the sale support student educational opportunities within the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology. Thank you for your continued support.

Ron Giese, emeritus professor and longtime chair of the chairman of the Department of Forest Science and Ecology, died Sunday, Oct. 18 at the age of 75. He joined the CALS faculty and became department chair in 1976 and served in that position until he retired in 1998. For more, view his obituary online.

Dietram Scheufele, professor in life sciences communication, has been named as co-chair of the National Conference of Lawyers and Scientists. NCLS is a joint committee set up by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Bar Association to examine and guide policy surrounding scientific development. Scheufele, who has already served a three-year term on NCLS, was appointed co-chair by AAAS. The other co-chair was appointed by ABA.

James Ntambi, professor in the departments of nutritional sciences and biochemistry, will be inducted into the Uganda National Academy of Sciences on Oct. 30. Since fall of 2002, Ntambi has led a program that takes undergraduates to Uganda to learn about nutrition and put what they learn into practice – an experience that brings new meaning to their education. UW-Madison professor Sean Carroll is a finalist for the 2009 National Book Award. He is one of five contenders in the NBA’s nonfiction category for his “Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origin of Species.” The winner in this and the contests other three categories — fiction, poetry and young people’s literature — will be announced at the 60th National Book Awards Benefit Dinner and Ceremony in New York City on Wednesday, November 18. Each Winner will receive $10,000 and a bronze statue; each finalist will receive a bronze medal and $1,000.

Jo Handelsman, professor in the departments of Bacteriology and Plant Pathology is a recipient of the Women’s Philanthropy Council (WPC) Champion Awards at the UW-Madison.
The Champion Awards are presented to a man and a woman from campus nominated by their peers for outstanding advocacy to women. The recipients will be honored at the WPC’s Biennial Forum today (Oct. 29), and each will have the opportunity to designate a $5,000 grant to a program benefiting women at the university.
