CALS APC 2007 Ballot Information

This year, Academic Planning Council members are being elected in the Natural Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Division, and Social Sciences Division. These newly elected members will serve on the Academic Planning Council for three years beginning in the fall of 2007.

All CALS faculty may vote in the Natural Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences Divisions. Each faculty member may vote for one candidate in each division. The candidates by division are:

NATURAL SCIENCES DIVISION CANDIDATES


William Karasov

Professor William Karasov joined the UW-Madison faculty in 1985 in the Department of Wildlife Ecology with interests in physiological ecology and wildlife toxicology. He is a member of the Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center and the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Nutritional Sciences. He has served as a Jacob Blaustein Scholar at Blaustein International Center for Desert Studies in Israel (1992), visiting Professor at the University of San Luis, Argentina (1995, 1998), at the Kunming Institute of Zoology (2000), Leverhlulme Trust Visiting Professor at University of Wales (2001), and Visiting Professor at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (2004). From 1985-90 he was a Fellow at the Sand County Foundation's Leopold Reserve. His awards include a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator (1985-1990), a Fulbright Research Award (1997) and the Pound Research Award (1990) and the Jung Teaching Award (2005) from CALS. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, Ecological Society of America, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has served on the Editorial Boards of American Journal of Physiology (1992-2001), Ecology (1995-1997), Physiological and Biochemical Zoology (1998-2001), The Auk (2000-2004), and Functional Ecology (2002-2004). He was a member of the UW-Madison Faculty Senate as senator or alternate in 1985-86 and l987-88, has served on varied committees within CALS (Animal Care and Use Committee, Curriculum Revitalization Project, Honors Program Committee, and International Programs Committee), and is currently a member of the steering committee of the National Science Foundation IGERT Training Program on Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development on our campus [IGERT = integrated graduate education and training.]

Phil Barak

PhD, Hebrew Univ of Jerusalem, 1988; Asst Prof, UW-Madison 1991-99; Assoc Prof, 1999-present. Interim Asst Dean, CALS Undergraduate Programs & Services, Oct '06-May '07.

Chair, Soils Curriculum Committee, 2003-06. Member, CALS Instructional Improvement Committee, two 3-yr terms. Chair, Steenbock Library Committee, 2005-07. Senator, Faculty Senate, 4 yrs. Chair, Information Technology Committee, 2006-07.

Educause Medalist, 1999. Wisconsin Teaching Scholar, 2006-07.

Kevin Shinners

Currently a full professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering. Joined the faculty in 1985 conducting teaching and research in the Machinery Systems area. Adjunct faculty appointment with Mechanical Engineering. Current research efforts concentrate on developing more efficient means of producing, storing and processing biomass feedstocks and hay and forage crops. Recent service to CALS has included Scholarship and Loans Committee, Agricultural Research Station Oversight Committee, OJ Noer Turfgrass Research Station Review Committee, Arlington Agricultural Research Station Review Committee, and current Faculty Advisor for Babcock House. Recent service to UW has included Commission on Faculty Compensation and Economic Benefits, Faculty Senate, Hilldale Award Committee, Physical Sciences Divisional Executive Committee (Chair 2005-2006).


SOCIAL SCIENCES DIVISION CANDIDATES


Jacqueline Hitchon

Jacqueline Hitchon is Professor and Chair in the Department of Life Sciences Communication. She also served as Interim Director of the CALS Communication Program 2003-4. Hitchon's research explores audience psychological processing of persuasive communications, particularly those concerned with health and the environment. She has published in such major journals in the field as Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Communication Theory, Communication Research, and Political Communication . She is a respected educator on campus, having been awarded a Lilly Teaching Fellowship 1995-6, a shared winner of the Regents' Award for Program Excellence as a Faculty Fellow of Bradely Residential Learning Community 1998, and a guest football coach nominated by student athletes 2003. Campus committees on which she has served include the Dean's Search and Screen Committee for CALS Dean 2006, and for SoHE Dean 2000, Hilldale Undergraduate Research Committee for the Social Sciences 1996-2001, Committee on Undergraduate Recruitment, Admissions and Financial Aid, 2002-3, Committee on Communication A Assessment 2005-present and she has served as a long term member of the Women's Faculty Mentoring Program's Advisory Board 1999-03 and 2006-present. In her joint appointment, she has served on CALS' Research Advisory Council 2000-3, and on SoHE's APC 1998-99 and 2003-6, Undergraduate Program Council (chair) 2001-3, Equity and Diversity Committee (chair) 2001-3, Change Management Committee 2000-1, Governance Committee 2000-1 and Mission Committee 2000-1. Other committee service of note includes advisory boards for the Daily Cardinal and Badger Herald.
