These are tough times for CALS. We are challenged to maintain expertise and build new capacity to meet the expectations of our students, the campus, and our partners. We are up to the task and I would be honored to help shape our future direction.
I am an associate professor and extension specialist, and serve as department associate chair. My research, extension, and teaching focus on people and forests toward policies and management strategies that sustain individuals, communities, and forests. I've served on several department committees, and currently serve as co-chair of our graduate committee.
In my nine years at UW-Madison as post doc, assistant professor, and just recently, as a new associate professor, I have served the Department of Soil Science, CALS, and the University System in a variety of ways. Through this service, I have learned a great deal about how UW-Madison operates and have come to deeply appreciate the service UW-Madison provides to our students, the state, and the world.
This appreciation has been especially honed through my service to establish a new Environmental Sciences Major in CALS and as Chair of the UW-Madison Teaching Academy. Both these efforts have afforded me opportunities to interact and collaborate with many people from students to faculty and deans from across the university. Moreover, I am active in the Biology Major, Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, and the DELTA program, which has extended my service well beyond my home department. I would like to extend this service even more by serving on the Academic Planning Council. I would view this honor, if so awarded, as a great opportunity to collaborate with other faculty and deans guiding our college into the future.
In closing, I believe the experiences and background I hold would make me an effective member of this council, especially given my background in education and work with undergraduate advising. I would couple my understanding of our role in education with the strong research mission of the college of which I contribute if elected to this council. Please accept my nomination to serve and thank you for your consideration.
Prof. Gould has had an extensive history as a member of the University of Wisconsin community starting with an Academic Staff position in 1986 as an Assistant Research Scientist to his current tenured faculty position with a 3-way (teaching, research and extension) split position in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. He is an outstanding instructor given his two Departmental graduate teaching awards. His service on the Social Studies Divisional Committee and as Associate Editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics is evidence of his appreciation of the research agenda of the University. His recent award from the University of Wisconsin county extension faculty also provides evidence of this excellence in fulfilling the University’s outreach mission. In summary, the strength of Prof. Gould’s application is his long history with the University which has involved him fulfilling all three of the University’s missions, teaching, research and extension both from an academic staff person as well as faculty member.
