The fundamental gift to create the Walnut Street Greenhouse range was provided by Margaret E. Mc Dowell, class of 1922. See the gallery for an image of the stone commemoration marker for this generous contribution.
One wing of the old section (greenhouses 32-34) was donated by the Wisconsin Canners Association in 1957. These greenhouses are still in use today. See the gallery for an image of the plaque hanging outside these houses.
The new section of the Walnut Street Greenhouse could not have been built without donations from our sponsors. We commemorate these gifts at various places on-site, mostly through landscaping plaques and through glass etching on the doors leading to the various wings of greenhouses.
Some of our major 2005 construction sponsors were:
- The Irwin and Linda Smith Family
- D.C. Smith
- William F Heckrodt
- Kristin De Groot
- Tara, Andrew, Brian, and Helen Gottschalk
- Fawn Laack
- Roger and Elmer G Biddick
We have also received occasional donations of equipment. We would like to thank the following sponsors:
Barr Engineering - for the donation of our outdoor walk-in cooler, frequently used for plant vernalization or low-temp growing conditions.
We greatly appreciate all these donations. These sponsors have enabled decades of research in a breadth of plant-related fields. Having a state-of-the-art facility on campus also enables the UW to attract students and staff who wish to utilize these resources for their work and study.
Want to help the UW by being a donor to one of their programs?
You can follow this link: http://www.uwfoundation.wisc.edu/ to explore many giving opportunities. If you wish to direct exactly where your contribution should be used, there are options for that on the site. Gifts are tax-deductible.
