Day 3: Research Career Fair Companies

It is Day 3 of the Ten Days of Career Services and you need to begin thinking about the 175 companies that are coming to the Spring Career and Internship Fair and the 70 organizations that are coming to the Public Service Fair.  Researching these organizations are a vital part of you being successful while talking to a recruiter.  You should have a base knowledge of the companies and organizations you want to talk to and what kind of company they are.

There are several resources available to help you achieve this.  The best resource available is looking at all of the companies on BuckyNet.  Just log-in to your account and click on the events tab.  From here you can choose either the Spring Career and Internship Fair or the Public Service Fair.  BuckyNet has all of the organizations for both events complete with bio’s of the companies and many have job positions posted.  If you do not have an account or are having trouble logging in, email career@cals.wisc.edu with your student id, major and year you plan to graduate and we will get your account set up right away.

CALS Career Services also has several handouts that could be very useful.  Here is a handout with all of the organizations coming to the Public Service Fair.  Another handout with all of the CALS related companies coming to the Spring Career and Internship Fair will be coming soon. It has information on each company and the majors that the company may be interested in.  Notice that many companies come to the career fair with intentions of hiring for specific majors, but chances are their company will hire your major.  If that specific recruiter is not hiring for your major, ask them if they will forward your resume to the person that is hiring for your major.

With all of these lists you should skim through them and decide which ones you want to talk to. Create an ordered list with the most important companies or organizations on top and least important on bottom.  If there are some larger companies on your list, think about talking to them first as they tend to have longer lines.  Also make sure you fully understand each company on your list and be prepared to have long conversations with them.

If you come prepared to these fair, the night will go much better for you and you will be much more comfortable.
