As I look forward to the next couple of weeks, I think about what the holidays will bring. I think about the snow that will be falling soon and the cold that comes with it. I also think about the finals students will be having and the amount of studying that will be happening.
What I see is a lot of time consuming projects that should include looking at internships and applying for jobs. Even as students get very involved in their school work and being home, their minds should also be on bettering their careers. After all, that is what we students are here for.
Your winter break is the perfect time to update your resume. It should be the time when you begin looking back at the past semester and putting your experiences on your resume. It should also be a time when you should update any personal information that may have changed, maybe your GPA, your address, or maybe you joined a new club. Keep updating because the spring will be approaching soon.
As spring comes, so does the Spring Career Fair. The official date will be January 25, 2011 at the Kohl Center. It will be from 4:30-8:00 PM. It is right after we students start coming back from classes. This is a perfect place to pick up an internship if you haven’t done so already. Winter break is also a great time for you to look at possible employers on BuckyNet that you may want to talk to and to brush up on what you want to tell them when you meet them.

Winter break is also a perfect time to apply for certain positions. There are several positions available in BuckyNet and a lot of employers post here during the winter break because they understand this is when students have the most time to apply. You can also use BuckyNet to apply for open positions that employers will be interviewing for at the career fair.
Even though students are away during winter break, the CALS Career Services Staff is still on campus working to make your future career a success. Winter break is a great time to sign up for a resume review or for general career advice. Especially since we will be less busy with students during this time period than we will be when all of the students come back. Especially with the career fair around the corner. Come and meet with us and use us to your fullest advantage.
Look to this time of year not only to study hard and have a great holiday time, but also use all of your extra time to improve your marketability as an employee.
