Looking back at this past semester we had quite a few info. sessions here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. You may be asking, what is important about this event?
Info. Sessions are very important to your career success. Many of the companies that are hosting info. sessions also are interviewing on campus for various positions. These companies will often use info. sessions as a way to reach out to students they would like to interview. Recruiters use these events for a reason, to get the best students for their positions. It is also a good networking opportunity for yourself to get to know the recruiter and get you an even better inside connection to the company.
Using this reasoning, an info. session is very important to you because it gives you face time with the employer. If you stand out in the info. session as someone who is genuinely interested in their company, you may also resignate better with the company when they come to interview you. You are the person that took the extra initiative to get to know the company, and thus will be offered the job over someone who didn’t get to know the company as well as you did.
This will not only allow you to network with the employer, but possibly a way to get an inside look at the company. To see if you really want to work here. If you would be a good fit for the company. You can ask about the environment in the workplace and maybe even the pay compared to other companies. The inside information about the company you could get in an info. session could be invaluable compared to the amount of research you may have to do.
An info. session is often a place where you are able to get information about the company. A company’s info. session often will include at least ten minutes of information about the company and where it is headed in the future. Maybe some major products and its future initiatives it is looking into. This is a great way to conduct research on the employer for your possible interview with them later that day or sometime in the future. The person that is giving the info. session is also commonly the person that will be interviewing you.
Another positive to going to an info. session is the ability to figure out what the company is looking for in an applicant. Several of the recent info. sessions have been focused around what employers want in their employees. They explain a lot of information in an info. session that can be very valuable to yourself if you use it wisely. They may also give you interviewing tips and ways to help you succeed in finding not only a job in their company, but in any company you apply for.
With all of this amazing information given to you at an info. session, take it with a grain of salt. Just because they tell you what to do to help your application, does not mean you will automatically get the job. All you can do is prepare to the best of your ability and hope that you are the best candidate they interview. An info. session is one way that you can better prepare than the next person.
I think info sessions are an incredible way to gain a competitve edge in writing a resume. Its exactly that kind of inside HR knowledge that cause many to opt for a professional resume.
