When I went to the career fair my freshman year I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t even planning on going until someone said I should come. I ended up going home and redoing my resume, getting ready and preparing, or trying to, in less than three hours. When I showed up I read through some of the descriptions of companies that interested me and honed in on my specific major. There were not many companies there looking for my major, or so I thought. I left very disappointed and I didn’t know what I did wrong.
The thing I did wrong was I didn’t prepare. Preparation for the career fair is very important and today you are on your last day to prepare. There is an amazing workshop today called Making the Most of the Career Fair in 1360 Genetics from 5-6 p.m. There is also a walk-in resume review in 240 Steenbock Library from 7-9 p.m. Both will offer you an opportunity to prepare for the career fair.
I thought I would also help you prepare for the career fair with a few tips that could help you in your search for a job in the most competitive of places, a career fair.
The first thing you should do is look at the employers that are coming to the Spring Career and Internship Fair. You can do this by logging on to your BuckyNet account and going to events and clicking on the Spring Career Fair. Here you can find the websites to the employers. You can also go to our website where there is a posting of CALS related employers according to your major.
Using this information you should research the companies. Find what they are interested in and see if they would be interested in you. You can also look for jobs openings they may have posted on their website because you can maybe talk with their representative at the career fair about that position.
Make sure you also look for companies that are not directly related to your major. Companies generally need all majors. Monsanto, event though they are a seed company, will hire people in Life Sciences Communication because Monsanto does marketing and they may also hire a dairy science major to help find plants that are more easily digestible by ruminants. Companies are not just looking for one major, but several.
Use your time today to also look at your resume and improve it further. Make the final touches on it and then bring it to the Walk-In Resume Review so they can look at it and help you with any changes they think should happen. Your resume means a lot to employers and is very important.
Make sure you create a short 30 second synopsis of yourself to give to the employers you will be talking to. Make sure it is good, snappy and makes you stand out to the employers. Also come prepared so you can actually talk to the employer so maybe you can make a connection.
Finally you should decide what you are going to wear. Make sure it is professional dress with a suit if possible. This means even black socks (white socks look silly under black pants).
Use these tips to help you prepare for the career fair. Trust me, you will come away with a much better outlook of the career fair if you prepare for it.
