Following Up With Employers

Yesterday was a very important day, but if you want yesterday to actually be worth your time, you need to make sure to follow-up with the employers you met  at the Career Fair.

A great way to do this is to send out a hand-written thank you.  You should do a professional business style letter with the first paragraph saying thank you to the person who was talking to you.  You should then go into what your strengths are and how you would fit into the organization.  Make sure you have continued enthusiasm for the position.  Make sure to close with a suggestion for further action such as to meet for an interview.   You can send this in an email or in the mail.

With this thank you letter you should also send another copy of your resume.  This will make you stand out to the employers and give them the ability to re-look at your resume.  Your resume will then be able to be handed to the right person in a more timely fashion.

Stand out!

I am quite sure you also got a lot of employers saying “fill out a profile on our website.”  Even though you may think this is an employer telling you to go “look for jobs yourself because I can do nothing for you,” this is not what they are saying.  You should make sure you fill this out because employers look at who filled out a profile.  Many students actually do not do this, so employers look at the people who filled out a profile  as people who are actually interested and are driven to succeed.  This will then allow you to browse their job postings and that recruiter may contact you later.  It is a great tool for you to utilize.

Even though these follow-up items may seem tedious and won’t work, these things really do work.  They make you stand out because not very many students do these things.  It is another tool you can use to put yourself above the rest of the competition.  So take the time today to follow up with employers.
