Recent Grad Job Search Strategies

In the past few weeks I’ve met with a few recent graduates who are looking for jobs and feeling frustrated. To be honest (and probably sound like a broken record), it’s a tough job market right now, not just in Wisconsin but across the country. However, there are opportunities available and I’ve compiled a list of some great tools to help in your job search.

-BuckyNet is a UW-Madison job posting system that is shared across the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, School of Business, College of Letters & Science, School of Human Ecology, Wisconsin Alumni Association, and School of Education. All students have access to BuckyNet and can search for jobs based on keywords and location.

- Each state has a Department of Workforce website with valuable information about the job outlook in the state. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce has a list of the top high-growth jobs in the state of Wisconsin. All of the job categories feature information about salary, working conditions, and current jobs postings throughout the state.

-Big Shoes Network features jobs in the fields of advertising, communications, graphic design, interactive, marketing, public relations, social media, and web design & development. Most of the jobs on this site are located in Illinois and Wisconsin, but there are a few jobs listed in Minnesota.

-Life Science Alley is a non-profit trade association serving the life sciences in Minnesota and the surrounding region. The site has a job board that features a variety of life science related positions. You can search by job category or location.

-University Research Park has a Career Center where you can upload your resume for University Research Park tenants to view. You can also search the current job opportunities available throughout Research Park.

These tools will be a great starting point for your job search. If you have additional questions regarding your job search contact career@cals.wisc.edu. Best of luck!
