This semester CALS Career Services is introducing two students, Jen Bloesch and Cady Duber, who will be filling the roles of peer advisor. The peer advisor is a new initiative within CALS Career Service and is designed to offer CALS students more opportunities to get help on their resumes and cover letters. For the first time, CALS Career Service will be offering Walk-in hours for any student wanting to drop by and have their resume looked at. Keep posted for the exact times walk-in advising will be provided.
Jen and Cady each provided a little information about themselves:
Jen Bloesch:
I am a senior majoring in Community and Environmental Sociology and Communication Arts, with a certificate in Environmental Studies. I came into CALS my sophomore year; after a year of being in Cross-College Advising Service, I found the major of my dreams: C&E Sociology. I come from a Madison suburb, where my agricultural background includes only having corn fields near my neighborhood, so it may seem a bit odd to others when I say I fell in love with food and agriculture. All it took was a book called Eat Here by Dan Halweil for me to realize how food is connected to our lives and our society in nearly every way. Since then, I have deeply enjoyed scrutinizing such topics as agricultural sociology, social and environmental justice, food preparation and management, community development, and local and organic agricultural systems. I can say that I have happily resided in the CALS department, and I am thrilled at the opportunity this college provides me to study agriculture in the way that I have.
Needless to say, I am very excited to work on the Career Services team. Coming from a degree in which a specific job or career is by no means certain post-graduation, I can appreciate the services that CALS Career Services provides. I think that while job hunting can be a really scary process, it is simultaneously really exciting. I am enthusiastic to help my fellow students embark on that career-finding journey, and I hope to contribute in whatever way I can. If you need help on a resume or just want to talk about life after college, I am here to help!
Cady Dueber:
Hello, My Name is Cady Dueber and I am a junior majoring in Food Science. I have been a city girl my entire life, growing up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, so since coming into the College of Agriculture and Life Science I have immersed myself in different aspect of the Agricultural world. I have taken an active role in the Association of Women in Agriculture (AWA) and Food Science Club here on campus. Being a member of AWA has opened my eyes to the diversity and camaraderie that is within the agricultural industry.
In the last two years I have been given the opportunity to work in many different components of food production. Until this year I have worked at Babcock Dairy Plant as a student assistant, allowing myself to engage in the production and distribution of food products such as the notorious Babcock ice cream, award winning cheeses and locally produced milk. The summer following freshman year I interned with Dean Foods where I mainly worked on texture and shelf life projects pertaining to products distributed to large Quick Server Restraints (ex: Dairy Queen, McDonalds etc.) This past year I interned with Land O’Lakes in their Dairy Foods Division – Research and Development: Butter and Spreads group.
I am thrilled to be in my current position of CALS Career Services Peer Advisor. I am here to point you in the right direction concerning your resume and cover letters. Your resume and cover letter is your first shot at landing a job or internship and I want to help you to present the best possible representation of the hard work that you have put into not only your academic work but as well as your career thus far. I look forward to working with each of you this coming year. Go Badgers!
