The Advantages of the Peace Corps

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go abroad and apply what you learn in college to real-life situations? By joining the Peace Corps, you have the opportunity to use your CALS degree to help those in need with agriculture or environmental conservation assistance, food security and health while building life-long friendships.

As a volunteer, you spend 27 months working in a specific work program with opportunities including agriculture, environment, education, youth & community development, health & HIV/AIDS education, business and Information & community technology.   Use your knowledge of soils and chemistry to work with locals to manage nitrogen levels in wet soil conditions.   Put your observation skills and nutrition knowledge to work to work with farmers to maximize duck egg production.

Agriculture and environmental conservation assistance are among the highest need categories in the Peace Corps. As an agriculture volunteer, you will get the opportunity to work with small-scale farmers and families who need help with production, food security, organic farming, environment conservation, and transforming farms into businesses that support local economies. Volunteers who focus on the environment will be able to establish or encourage programs that promote forest conservation and alternative energy use while combating the effects of climate change. You get to be responsible for educating communities about environmental issues as you help to alleviate some of these problems locally.

Life may be calling you join to the Peace Corps, and the only way to know for sure is to get more information! If any of the above-mentioned opportunities have you considering the Peace Corps or left you wanting to learn more, consider attending the upcoming Peace Corps General Information Session on Tuesday, November 15th from 6-7:30pm, where you will hear from a returned volunteer as he shares his experiences of service in Mali. The information session will take place in the Media Room of the Red Gym, and campus recruiter Kim Johnson will be there to answer all of your burning questions.
