Meeting was called to order by Frank Kooistra at 8:35 a.m.
A mock exercise of the compensation plan is currently going on. Increases for academic staff will probably be three percent.
The Campus Natural Areas Committee has denied the College's request for plot space near Eagle Heights. F. Kooistra is working to find a middle ground that will satisfy both sides. If that doesn't work, the College plans to appeal the decision to the Campus Planning Committee.
The CALS Expo was a success. High school biology groups were on campus and involved in hands on experiments. The College is considering alternating this program with the Engineering Expo.
The FFA contest brought over 2,000 participants to campus.
The question was asked why the cost of parking has not gone down now that the Athletic Department is out of debt. F. Kooistra suggested they ask Bill Steffenhagen since he is on the Transportation Services Board. E. Maurer would like to include that information in the next issue of "Inside the College."
There were two corrections to the minutes. Under Opening Remarks, construction of Biochemistry, Phase II is scheduled for the 05-07 biennium. Under By-laws Subcommittee, the second paragraph should read, R. Daluge made a motion to accept the bylaws as amended.
E. Maurer made a motion to approve the minutes as amended. B. Wilson second the motion.
E. Maurer asked about the email list for academic staff. Cliff Dillhunt has checked with Colleen McCabe and he can get the list any time. Ellen will send out the climate and performance survey results.
R. Daluge nominated B. Holden to serve as co-chair and T. Wright second the motion. B. Jensen made a motion to close the nominations and J. Mather second the motion. Rick Daluge made a motion to elect B. Holden and J. Mather second the motion. There was no discussion. The Committee unanimously elected B. Holden as co-chair of CASI.
Call for nominations will go out to Wards 2, 4, 5, and 6. Dean Aberle will appoint a new member to Ward 7.
A draft of the CALS CASI Guidelines for Academic Staff Performance Evaluations was distributed at the April meeting. B. Jensen summarized the document. The subcommittee feels very strongly that 1) academic staff should have mandatory written reviews and merit based on the reviews, and 2) there should be an academic staff representative on department merit review committees. Supervisors should sign the review stating the appropriate merit and the form should have space for employee rebuttal. It was suggested that a sentence be added stating that the written review is to be discussed with the supervisor.
T. Wright suggested this committee develop some guidelines and forms to be used and the departments can then decide how they wish to approach the evaluations. During the upcoming merit meetings, the Dean has asked the departments to bring copy of what they currently use for performance evaluations. J. Mather said that academic staff in the departments should be involved in the process. The ad hoc committee is going to refine the draft guidelines that were distributed.
The subcommittee sent out a survey to department administrators to find out what is currently being done for new employees in the departments. They found that mostly benefits are covered. The committee would like to see an academic staff person personally greet the new employee and give them a packet that contains several pieces of information (list of enclosures was distributed). C. Dillhunt will provide the list of academic staff. The subcommittee would like to see members of CASI as ambassadors. They will get a list of new employees each month. The subcommittee hopes to hand out folders at the June 1 meeting.
L. Heideman briefly reviewed the long-term appointments in the College. She will give the committee more information at the next meeting.
The committee decided to meet one more time this semester. The meeting will be held on June 1, 2:30-4:00 p.m. at the West Madison Research Station. T. Wright will send directions to the Station and will give tours of the gardens at 2:00 p.m. for anyone interested.
