Next NetID deactivation is April 7

DoIT will deactivate NetID-related service accounts (i.e., My UW, WiscMail, WiscCal and dial access) for non-eligible students, faculty and staff on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. People who are valid students or who have valid appointments with the University should not see their service affected. (more…)

Information security: A brownbag series

The Office of Campus Information Security is once again sponsoring a series of brown bag sessions for faculty and staff, this time geared to employees on the west end of campus. Brown bags will be held each Wednesday, 12 - 1 p.m., from March 4 – April 1. All brown bags are free, and no registration is required. Location: Room 1325 of the Health Sciences Learning Center. Campus offers resources for dealing with phishing scams

Phishing scams are a growing problem on campus. Phishing attempts are often difficult to detect, since they may appear to be from a valid source (especially if that source appears to be the UW). To address this problem, the Office of Campus Information Security (OCIS) is launching a campaign to educate the campus community about phishing and email scams. OCIS has posted some useful resources online for identifying scams, including FAQs, a list of dos and don’ts, and guidelines for those who are preparing legitimate mass emails so that those mailing aren’t treated as phishing attempts. IT Access List aims to make it easier to get access to various campus info systems

A new web resource was launched on November 10, 2008 to improve the process of getting access to campus IT systems. It’s called the IT Access List, and it can be found at http://www.cio.wisc.edu/itaccess/. This improvement was made as a result of the work of the Administrative Process Redesign (APR) team, IT Access for Transferring Employees, in partnership with DoIT staff who helped develop and implement this new web resource. New NetID password protocol aims to foil phishing scams

The UW-Madison Information Technology Committee (ITC) and the Madison Technical Advisory Group (MTAG) recently approved a new control for enforcing changes to the NetID password. The control was put in place in response to actions taken during the recent wave of campus phishing scams, in which several campus users had their accounts compromised. DoIT froze their accounts, reset their passwords and asked them to set new passwords. Several customers went back to a recently-used password, which enabled the phishing compromise to continue. John Krogman is new DoIT Chief Operating Officer
