Remember WALSAA Farm Tech Days picnic - July 22

UW-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Farm & Industry Short Course graduates are invited to attend the annual Wisconsin Agricultural and Life Sciences Alumni Association (WALSAA) Farm Technology Days Picnic in Waterloo. It will be held Wednesday, July 22, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Northcrest Dairy. The dairy is owned and operated by Bob and Chris Topel and Jeff and Jenny Spoke. The menu includes brats, burgers, salads, soda, beer, milk and dessert for just $10 per person. Plan to attend Farm Technology Days on Wednesday and join WALSAA at the picnic. No reservations are needed and friends and family are welcome!

Farm Technology Days is located at Crave Brothers Farm, LLC, W11555 Torpy Road, Waterloo, Wis., while the WALSAA picnic site is just a mile north at W11673 Ridge Road, Waterloo, Wis. Signs will be posted to direct traffic from the show.

Join CALS in Farm Technology Days Alumni Tent July 21-23

CALS alumni attending Wisconsin Farm Technology Days July 21-23 on the Crave Brothers Farm in Waterloo should plan to take a few minutes to join fellow alumni in the Alumni Tent. For the second season, CALS is teaming up with UW-River Falls, UW-Platteville and the Wisconsin Technical Colleges to host daily alumni events.

So save the dates and look for more details about this opportunity to get caught up on what’s happening at the college and with your fellow alumni.

Farm and Industry Short Course alumni celebrate 124 years

More than 250 friends and alumni of the UW-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course gathered for the annual FISC reunion on Saturday, Jan. 31 in DeForest.

The event began with a seminar by new FISC Director Theodore Halbach, who outlined his goals for the program. The luncheon program included remarks from CALS Dean Molly Jahn, Short Course Alumni Association President Andrea Brossard Martin, WALSAA President Liz Henry, Alice in Dairyland Ashley Hubregtse, CALS Associate Deans John Shutske and Robert Ray, and UW Foundation Director of Development Jody Wickham. A number of lucky attendees received door prizes donated by Wisconsin agribusiness firms. (more…)

Seminars by Nobel Prize winner Smithies now online

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s first annual Smithies Symposium took place on Thursday, May 29, 2008. Oliver Smithies gave a slightly modified version of his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, which described the series of experiments that were essential in the development of a powerful technology known as gene targeting in mice, and comprise his Nobel Award-winning work. The annual Farm and Industry Short Course Alumni Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, at the Comfort Inn and Suites at 5025 County Highway V, DeForest, WI 53532. The DeForest Comfort Inn and Suites is located at Highway V and I-90/94. Please register (Select “College of Agricultural & Life Sciences”) by Tuesday, January 27. John Phillips, distinguished FISC grad, returns to campus

John Phillips (UW-FISC ‘37) is a living example of the power of education, and he recently returned to UW-Madison and the home of the Farm and Industry Short Course (FISC) to visit with the current class of students about his life’s adventure.
