Provost offers update on furlough program

We want to provide you with an update on the mandated furlough program. Although some details remain to be worked out, we believe it is very important to share new information as it becomes available.

On a very positive note, the state has agreed with our request to exempt all student employment titles, such as Student Hourly, Teaching Assistant, Program/Project Assistant, and Research Assistant, from the furlough requirements.

State updates its FAQ on furloughs

The state Office of State Employee Relations has updated its FAQ sheet on state employee furloughs. Also, the UW-Madison budget page has new statements on furloughs from Chancellor Martin and UW System president Kevin Reilly.

Budget papers offer pros, cons of issues important to UW-Madison

Below is a list of budget papers that the Legislative Fiscal Bureau has drafted on budget items of interest to UW-Madison. Budget papers are provided to members of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance to consider as they debate and vote on the budget. These papers are written to give legislators every known pro and con on a particular issue before recommending a specific alternative. Budget update from Dean Molly Jahn

As you have heard, the Governor has announced an additional $1.6 billion budget shortfall. Governor Doyle plans to meet with UW System chancellors on Friday, May 15 to discuss the current budget situation and its potential impact. We do not yet have any specific information at this time as to how this shortfall will affect CALS. We will post additional information and answers to frequently asked questions as soon as they become available on the CALS budget web page http://www.cals.wisc.edu/budget/. We recognize this situation creates significant anxiety and confusion. We join our university leadership in our commitment to address your concerns and questions as quickly as possible.

We invite your comments on any of the following questions discussed at the budget forum:

  1. What core activities and qualities of our community must we protect at all costs and why?
  2. What efficiencies and opportunities should we pursue to increase resources and help grow a stable funding base?
  3. Do you see the need to eliminate or add items to the list of the principles that will guide us in this process?

Higher education provisions of federal stimulus legislation

With President Obama’s signature, the federal economic stimulus package is now fully enacted. Institutions of higher education nationwide, including UW-Madison, are being asked to contribute our expertise and strong record of success in education and innovation to help stimulate the economy-through an infusion of roughly $18 billion in competitive scientific research funding; almost $16 billion in student aid funding, primarily through increases in the Pell Grant; and billions more in State Stabilization funding given to States to potentially upgrade, modernize and repair (but not newly construct or maintain) K-12 and university facilities.
