New Babcock ice cream to mark Smokey Bear’s 65th year

Smokey Bear was recently spotted at the Babcock Dairy Plant, helping to whip up a special batch of ice cream to celebrate his 65th birthday. Samples of the ice cream, named “Smokey Bear’s Necessities,” will be distributed at the Dane County Farmer’s Market in downtown Madison on Saturday, August 8th. (more…)

Memorial for Arthur Kelman on August 2 at APS meetings

The plant pathology departments at UW-Madison and at North Carolina State University are jointly sponsoring a memorial for Arthur Kelman to be held at the American Phytopathological Society meetings.  The event will take place in Room A105 of the Convention Center, on Sunday, August 2, 2009, from 4–5 p.m.  There will be brief remarks from a few invited speakers, followed by an opportunity for others to provide comments, if they wish, and then a chance to mingle.

Remember WALSAA Farm Tech Days picnic - July 22

UW-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Farm & Industry Short Course graduates are invited to attend the annual Wisconsin Agricultural and Life Sciences Alumni Association (WALSAA) Farm Technology Days Picnic in Waterloo. It will be held Wednesday, July 22, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Northcrest Dairy. The dairy is owned and operated by Bob and Chris Topel and Jeff and Jenny Spoke. The menu includes brats, burgers, salads, soda, beer, milk and dessert for just $10 per person. Plan to attend Farm Technology Days on Wednesday and join WALSAA at the picnic. No reservations are needed and friends and family are welcome!

Farm Technology Days is located at Crave Brothers Farm, LLC, W11555 Torpy Road, Waterloo, Wis., while the WALSAA picnic site is just a mile north at W11673 Ridge Road, Waterloo, Wis. Signs will be posted to direct traffic from the show.

CALS All-College Forum — Sept. 29 (date change)

The CALS All-College Forum takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 3–4:30 p.m. in the Ebling Symposium Center, Microbial Sciences. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the college are invited to join Dean Molly Jahn to discuss the challenges and accomplishments of the past year and plans for the year ahead. Nobel laureate Har Gobind Khorana to be honored at room naming ceremony

The Biochemistry Addition’s auditorium will be named in honor of Har Gobind Khorana during a dedication ceremony on Thursday, July 30th at 4 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the Biochemistry Addition’s atrium, and all members of the university community are invited to attend.

Khorana, a Nobel laureate, will be present at the ceremony to accept this honor. (more…)

CALS alumni attending Wisconsin Farm Technology Days July 21-23 on the Crave Brothers Farm in Waterloo should plan to take a few minutes to join fellow alumni in the Alumni Tent. For the second season, CALS is teaming up with UW-River Falls, UW-Platteville and the Wisconsin Technical Colleges to host daily alumni events.

Each year CALS hosts a reception at World Dairy Expo to celebrate our relationships with alumni, industry, research and students.Having a strong faculty and staff presence at this event is a great way to showcase CALS to our industry partners.
