Guide to getting grants for grad students

The CALS Research Division is excited to offer a session for graduate students who are interested in grants and fellowships on October 6 from 4-5pm in 1360 Genetics/Biotech. Over pizza and soft drinks, learn about college resources for grad students, and how to write a proposal that a reviewer will love. The session will also offer an overview of the steps a savvy researcher follows to submit a proposal through college and campus channels.

Wear Red, Think Green: Recycling ambassadors needed for home football games

Contribute to sustainability on the UW-Madison campus and have a great time while doing it! Sign up to be a “Recycling Ambassador” at one or more home football games! All students/student organizations signing up to be a Recycling Ambassador at the September 6, 2008 Wisconsin vs. Marshall football game will get FREE admission to the CALS Fire-Up 2008 (www.cals.wisc.edu/fireup) which takes place in the historic UW Field House earlier that day! If you want to volunteer to become a “recycling ambassador” for the September 6th football game and attend the pre-game Fire-Up tailgate, please complete the online signup form.

In the “Student Org” section of the form you will need to indicate that you will be attending the Fire-Up.

SciMed Research Scholars offers opportunities for underrepresented grad students

The Science and Medicine Graduate Research Scholars (SciMed GRS) Program is a new program that has been established to enhance the experiences and opportunities of underrepresented graduate students in CALS and the School of Medicine and Public Health. The program encompasses more than 35 departments and graduate programs and works to build community and facilitate recruiting efforts of under-represented minority students in the biological sciences. Advanced Opportunity Fellowships for CALS and SMPH are now awarded through the SciMed GRS Program and the program provides resources to students including professional development opportunities and community gatherings of the graduate scholars. Best Practices: Thesis Binding Costs

The cost to bind or copy theses is typically not allowable on federally sponsored projects. Many theses copies are made as personal copies for advisors, committee members, the graduate student and their family members. These copies are thus unallowable and should not be charge to a sponsored project. (more…)

Fellowship opportunities for scientists and engineers

Washington University in Saint Louis, in conjunction with the University of Missouri, the Center for Emerging Technologies, and Innovate Saint Louis, is inviting applications for its Innovation Fellows, funded by the National Science Foundation. They seek individuals with an advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in the engineering, life sciences, nanotechnology, biomedical or medical fields, who have an interest in expanding their understanding of technology transfer and commercialization. These fellowships are ideal for scientists and engineers who wish to immerse themselves in commercialization, industry partnerships, and entrepreneurship.
