International ag and development conference and forum offers scholarships — apply by April 24

The Association for International Agriculture and Rural Development (AIARD) administers a competitive scholarship program to nurture and to provide partial financial support for students attending the annual Future Leaders Forum, May 31 – June 2 in Washington, D.C. Life Sciences Careers Day highlights career options for PhDs - April 25

Life Sciences Careers Day is a symposium financed by the Graduate School and several NIH Training Grants that is held every other year at UW-Madison for graduate students and postdocs. In the past it has drawn 300-350 participants each time. The symposium provides participants with perspectives about career choices after obtaining a Ph.D. in the biological sciences. For the first time, the symposium will be held in the new Microbial Sciences Building. The event is FREE and includes lunch.

Apply to be spring commencement student speaker by March 11

The Multicultural Graduate Network (MGN) and the Graduate Student Collaborative (GSC) are accepting applications from Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) and Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) candidates that are graduating in May or August 2009 to speak at the Friday Spring Commencement Ceremony. A review committee comprised of students from a variety of disciplines will evaluate the overall message and quality of the speech as well as the oratory skills of the applicant. Application materials are due Wednesday, March 11, 2009.

Volunteers sought for new edition of Guide to Graduate Student Life

“The Guide to Graduate Student Life” is a resource given to all new graduate students to help them acclimate to their new life at UW and the Madison community. The Graduate School is looking for the following types of volunteers to help revise the Guide:

  • editors
  • writers
  • fact-checkers
  • photographers

All participants will receive credit within the publication and will have some creative license to improve, modify and update the guide. Please email Sandy Sulzer at gsc@bascom.wisc.edu if you are interested in participating or would like more information.

Nominate grad students for Peer Mentor Award by March 6

The Multicultural Graduate Network (MGN) and the Graduate Student Collaborative (GSC) are looking to honor the graduate student in your department who takes the time to help others succeed in graduate school by nominating him or her for a Graduate Student Peer Mentor Award. Any student or staff can submit a nomination for this award on behalf of a deserving graduate student. To nominate a graduate student, by March 6, 2009, complete the Graduate Student Mentor Awards Nomination Form which includes writing 200-400 words detailing how the nominee exhibited mentorship qualities Preference will be given to specific examples of mentorship. Nominees must be UW-Madison graduate students who have mentored other graduate students.
