David Drake and Jamie Nack receive Peterson Technology Transfer Award

David Drake, UW-Madison assistant professor and UW-Extension wildlife specialist and Jamie Nack, Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology outreach specialist, received the 2007 Donald R. Peterson Technology Transfer Award for their Wildlife on the Farm exhibit at the 2007 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. The award was presented April 9 at the annual Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Board of Directors meeting. (more…)

WALSAA and Daughters of Demeter announce Outstanding Sophomore Award winners

The Wisconsin Agricultural and Life Sciences Alumni Association (WALSAA) and the Daughters of Demeter are pleased to announce the winners of the Outstanding Sophomore Awards. Twelve students will receive a $1,000 scholarship, which will be applied to the 2008-2009 school year. Winners were selected from a talented pool of applicants based on their academic achievement, leadership experience on campus, and involvement in community service. Students will be recognized at a luncheon with representatives from WALSAA, Daughters of Demeter, and the Dean on Friday, May 2, 2008. (more…)

UW-Madison team earns gold at intercollegiate dairy challenge

The UW-Madison has two reasons to be proud after the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge held last weekend in Madison. The NAIDC is a management contest to incorporate all phases of a specific dairy business. A UW-Madison team consisting of he UW-Madison Chrissy Wendorf, Linda Behling, Shannon Dwyer and Matt Repinsky (coached by Dairy Science Graduate Student John Goeser) earned a gold award in the event. All of these students have demonstrated excellent promise in their burgeoning research careers, and we recognize both those awarded the Fellowship and those accorded an Honorable Mention.

Four CALS students inducted into Phi Kappa Phi honor society

Four CALS students were inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor societies, on April 6. The CALS inductees (with majors) include: Molly Sauerbrey (biology), Matthew Vogt (biochemistry), Trisha Weiland (nutritional Sciences) and Nicholas Zaban (biochemistry).

Teri Balser chosen for NSF Biology Scholars program

Teri Balser, Associate Professor of Soil Science, was recently chosen for the 2008-09 American Society for Microbiology and National Science Foundation “Biology Scholars” residency program. Modeled after the Carnegie Teaching Scholars program, the Biology Scholars program is designed to advance biology education nationally. Teri will join colleagues from around the nation in exploring the science and scholarship of biology teaching and learning.

Marvin Wickens receives 2008 Hilldale Award

Sam Dennis receives 2008 Public Health Award from Madison and Dane County

Sam Dennis, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, is a recipient of a 2008 Public Health Award from Madison and Dane County. He will be receiving a Partnership Award for working with community partners and involving youth in participatory photomapping, to better understand barriers to and opportunities for being physically active. The award is to be presented in a ceremony at Warner Park Community Center on Wednesday, April 16th at 1:30 pm.

Phil Townsend selected as 2008 Leopold Leadership Fellow

UW team’s research poster gets recognition at D.C. event

A research poster on “Microfluidic Sensors for Botulinum Neurotoxin,” by a team from the Departments of Bacteriology and Biomedical Engineering, was recognized as one of the best posters among 65 submitted at the Department of Homeland Security University Programs summit in D.C. Graduate student Megan Frisk received the award for the poster, from Jay Cohen, DHS Undersecretary for Science and Technology.
