Commencement Reception, Saturday, May 17

CALS and WALSAA invite graduates and their guests to a reception following the commencement ceremony to be recognized for the first time as CALS alumni. The reception will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2008 from noon – 2:00 p.m. in the Skyview Room, Fluno Center (601 University Avenue). Complimentary appetizers will be served. A brief program will take place at 12:30 p.m. with remarks from the college and WALSAA. Representatives from the college are invited attend and extend their congratulations. The Science of Beer — May 9

Join CALS for “The Science of Beer” presented by Miller Brewing Company. Miller’s beer experts will be giving a presentation on brewing, beer styles, and beer quality attributes. It will take place this Friday, May 9, 2008 at 10:00am in the Ebling Symposium Center, Microbial Sciences (1550 Linden Drive). A discussion will follow the presentation providing an opportunity to ask questions and test the experts. Attend Roundtable on Wisconsin’s bio-economy — May 16

Come together for a vibrant, interdisciplinary discussion on emerging agricultural and natural resource issues. And get some free lunch in the process! The “Ag and Natural Resources Lunch Policy Roundtable” series continues on May 16th from 12:00 - 1:15 in Rm 115 Taylor Hall, UW-Madison, with a presentation and discussion on “Measuring and improving environmental and economic performance of the Wisconsin bio-economy with integrated assessment models.” The presentation and discussion will be led by Tom Cox and his co-researchers of the UW-CALS SNAP-Plus Team. Lee Hood and Oliver Smithies present symposium May 29

The first 1st Oliver Smithies Symposium will be held May 29 at 2 p.m. in the Ebling Center in the Microbial Sciences Building. Featured will be Lee Hood of the University of Washington, speaking on “Systems Biology and Systems Medicine” (at 2 p.m.) and Oliver Smities himself on “Turning Pages—from Gels to Genes” (at 3. p.m.). The afternoon scientific program will culminate with a roundtable discussion (at 4 p.m.), when Lee and Oliver will share views, historical perspectives and philosophical insights gained from their lives in science. Life Sciences Communication and UW NAMA Chapter celebrate milestones on April 29

The UW-Madison student chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association and the Department of Life Sciences Communication are joining together for a Celebration of Excellence on Tuesday, April 29, 6-9 p.m., on the second floor of Hiram Smith Hall, 1545 Observatory Drive. Both groups are celebrating milestone anniversarys this year — 30 years for the Badger NAMA chapter and 100 years for Life Sciences Communication (established in 1908 as the Department of Agricultural Journalism). West Madison presents Family Hort Day - Saturday, April 26

The West Madison Agricultural Research Station is holding a Family Horticulture Day on Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. That’s the first in a season full of opportunities for visitors.
