Senior editor at Nature will speak here on June 16

Natalie DeWitt, a senior editor at Nature, will be on campus Monday, June 16th to give a public lecture about her experiences working at this prestigious science journal. DeWitt’s talk will be held from 12-1 p.m. in room 1111 of the Genetics/Biotechnology Center, and will cover the challenges of science writing, her responsibilities as an editor, and science publishing in general. Immediately following her talk, DeWitt will be available to answer student questions during a special lunch session held in Bock Labs’ Penthouse.

LSC hosts play about Rachel Carson on Sept. 5

The Department of Life Sciences Communication (LSC) will host A Sense of Wonder, a one-woman play, in honor of the department’s 100th Anniversary September 5th at 7 p.m. A Sense of Wonder, an inspiring tale brought to life by actress Kaiulani Lee, tells the story of how Rachel Carson launched our modern environmental movement while battling cancer. The play is based on Carson’s book Silent Spring. (more…)

Natural Product Biosynthesis, Engineering, and Drug Discovery, a symposium honoring the distinguished career of Professor Emeritus C. Richard Hutchinson, will be presented Friday, June 20 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., in 2006 Rennebohm Hall, School of Pharmacy. There is no fee but registration is required.

Lee Hood and Oliver Smithies present symposium May 29

The first 1st Oliver Smithies Symposium will be held May 29 at 1:45 p.m. in the Ebling Center in the Microbial Sciences Building. Following an introduction by CALS Dean Molly Jahn, Lee Hood of the University of Washington, will speak on “Systems Biology and Systems Medicine,” after which Oliver Smithies will speak on “Turning Pages—from Gels to Genes” (at about 3 p.m.). The afternoon scientific program will culminate with a roundtable discussion (at 4 p.m.), when Lee and Oliver will share views, historical perspectives and philosophical insights gained from their lives in science. CALS and WALSAA invite graduates and their guests to a reception following the commencement ceremony to be recognized for the first time as CALS alumni. The reception will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2008 from noon – 2:00 p.m. in the Skyview Room, Fluno Center (601 University Avenue). Complimentary appetizers will be served.
