Rural Immigration Summit looks at state’s changing cultural demographics — Feb. 29

Perspectives on immigration will be the focus of a one-day, community educational summit to be held on February 29, 2008, at the West Square Administration Building in Baraboo from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Rural Immigration Summit is designed to bring south central Wisconsin community residents together to learn about impacts of immigration.

Farm level milk prices have declined but remain relatively high. The February Class III price will be near $17.20, down more than $2 from the $19.32 for January but still more than $3.00 higher than a year ago. The Class IV price for February will be near $15.40, down about $0.90 from the $16.29 for January but still about $2.70 higher than a year ago.

UWCC’s farmer co-op conference weighs value of co-ops in today’s business climate

Understanding the true value of a cooperative is crucial to meeting the many strategic dilemmas facing cooperatives as they adapt to a changing business landscape. To explore this critical issue, more than 180 U.S. and Canadian co-op leaders (a record attendance) gathered in St. Paul, Minn., in early November for the 10th annual Farmer Cooperatives Conference. Conference addresses “the myths of energy” March 27

Cooperative Extension is offering a Myths of Energy Summit II on March 27 at Lakeshore Technical College. The program will show farmers how to harvest energy and improve energy efficiency, offer information on anaerobic digesters and real life digester experiences, and whether it makes sense to use a wind turbine or solar thermal water heating. Serve as a guest speaker on food, health, agriculture and the environment

The Alumni Affairs Office is working with the Participatory Learning and Teaching Organization (PLATO) to hold a ten week science outreach course. We are looking for volunteers to serve as guest speakers. The course will take place on Thursdays from 1:00pm – 3:00pm at Independent Living (602 N. Segoe Road). Guest speakers will be asked to present a topic of their choice related to agriculture, health, food or the environment and participate in the group discussion. Corn Conference meetings slated for January

The 2008 Corn Conference meetings, sponsored by UW-Extension and the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association, will be held Jan. 10, 21 and 22 in Rice Lake, Johnson Creek and Richland Center. These conferences are designed to provide technical insight and practical advice to improve on-farm results. The meetings use the latest information available from university and industry research to help producers raise a crop with maximum yield, quality and profitability. The program is an in-depth learning experience with an opportunity to interact with corn production experts and fellow growers. (more…)
