FAQ on CALS criminal background checks

UW-Madison must comply with Board of Regent policy 20-19 that mandates that all UW institutions conduct a criminal background check on all new employees (with limited exceptions). This policy went into effect December 1, 2007. (more…)

May the cost to perform criminal background checks be applied to sponsored projects?

As described in a companion announcement this week in eCALS, all UW institutions must conduct a criminal background check on all new employees (with limited exceptions). The cost of performing such a check can be applied to a sponsored project if the individual hired is fully funded on that sponsored project and dedicated to the project for at least one full year. (If an individual resigns within the one-year period, or their funding changes within the one-year period, the cost assessed for the criminal background check must be removed from the sponsored project to an unrestricted fund.) Deadline for Employee Reimbursement Account (ERA) enrollment is Nov. 16

The annual ERA enrollment period is October 8 – November 16, 2007 . You must enroll annually! This fall, for the first time, the ERA enrollment information is being provided to employees electronically. You may download the ERA Summary Guide at http://etf.wi.gov/publications/era_2008summary_guide.pdf. The summary guide contains important and useful information. We suggest that you retain the URL for reference throughout the year. The ERA program is administered by Fringe Benefits Management Company (FBMC). (more…)

Professional development grants for classified non-represented staff

The Council for Non-represented Classified Staff (CNCS) is pleased to announce a continuation of the Professional Development Grant Program that provides units with matching grants for the professional development of classified non-represented staff. All UW-Madison classified permanent non-represented staff holding at least a 50 percent appointment are eligible for this program. (more…)

Academic Staff Governance Participation

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has a governance system under which faculty, academic staff and students share responsibility for campus governance.  Section 36.09 (4m) of the Wisconsin Statutes authorizes shared governance participation by members of the academic staff.  Additionally, both the Academic Staff Articles of Organization and a faculty Senate Resolution (March 2, 1987) encourage and support academic staff participation.  These documents direct units and supervisors to provide flexibility in work scheduling so that academic staff may serve on appropriate committees or on governance bodies such as the Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC), the Academic Staff Assembly, and the Committees on Academic Staff Issues (CASIs).

Mandatory Sexual Harassment Workshops

CALS supports the UW-Madison’s commitment to improve our campus climate and enhance the quality of our environment for work, teaching and learning, research and customer service. One key climate initiative, the Sexual Harassment Information and Resources Project, is an ongoing, comprehensive initiative to heighten campus awareness about sexual harassment issues and to increase our effectiveness in addressing this important campus concern.  This project includes a variety of initiatives that includes the presentation of sexual harassment informational sessions to all academic, administrative and service units.
