Farm and Industry Short Courses

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Farm and Industry Short Courses offer a quick and affordable approach to gaining agricultural business know-how. Through this 17-week program (which runs from November to March) students gain expertise from top instructors from diverse agricultural fields. Internship opportunities (for course credit) with a variety of agribusiness firms, farms and government agencies are frequently available.

The School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers
Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems and the Farm and Industry Short Courses

The School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers is a collaborative effort between the Farm and Industry Short Course Program and the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems. Through this unique partnership, students receive specialized training in operating, managing, and financing grass-based dairies. Courses in this program run from November through March, with subsequent internships in the late spring/summer (typically April through July).

Babcock Institute for International Dairy Research and Development

The Babcock Institute is a cutting-edge center for collaborative dairy science research joining industry leaders, educational institutions, and research institutes around the world. The institute strives to continually improve the dairy industry in Wisconsin, the United States, and in countries around the globe through cooperative research, market and trade analysis, and educational outreach.

The institute endeavors to reach constituents through a variety of mediums including multi-lingual publications, electronic outreach, international short courses and consulting opportunities, and conferences and workshops.

The Weinert Center, affiliated with the University of Wisconsin’s School of Business, is a specialized degree program for students interested in entrepreneurship. This new center offers coursework tailored to the needs of future business owners, managers and consultants.

UW-Madison Entrepreneurship Association

The UW-Madison Entrepreneurship Association unites students across campus who share an interest in small business ownership. Through this dynamic organization, entrepreneurs develop contacts with area business professionals and alumni and learn techniques for starting and managing small businesses.

Competitions for Students

G. Steven Burrill Technology Business Plan Competition

Each year interdisciplinary teams of entrepreneur-minded students compete for cash prizes of $10,000, $7,000, $4,000 and $1,000 in the G. Steven Burrill Technology Business Plan Competition. The annual challenge to the competitors: Design an innovative technology-based business plan and present it before a panel of judges.

The Schoofs Prize for Creativity
