Community & Environmental Sociology
Degrees offered: MS PhD
The Department of Rural Sociology’s graduate program provides in-depth training in the areas of agrofood systems, community, environment, and science and technology. Through our partnership with the Department of Sociology, we offer MS and PhD degrees. Our combined graduate program is designed to prepare students for scholarly research, teaching, or applied work. Our program is unique in integrating what are often separate programs in rural sociology, sociology, demography, and social psychology. With over 60 faculty and affiliated faculty across both departments, all major areas of sociological inquiry are represented in the curriculum. One flexible set of requirements permits students to create individualized programs to suit their particular interests and goals. Both quantitative and qualitative research are done and respected in our program, and we represent a wide variety of theoretical traditions. We consistently rank at or near the top in studies of U.S. sociology doctoral programs and we are known in the discipline for our climate of civility and openness which creates an exciting and diverse intellectual atmosphere. If your career goal is a Rural Sociology or Sociology faculty position at a good college or university or an applied social research job, your best option for superior training is our combined graduate program at University of Wisconsin-Madison.
