High technology will be an important part of global economic development in the 21st century. Research institutions will be called upon to generate new technologies that will help stimulate the economy, serve society, and provide resources for future research.

Managing Technology from Research to Market is a professional development course for those who manage technology research, who are engaged in the transfer of new technologies from the laboratory to the market, and who are running new companies and research parks.

Professional Development

This two-week course offers workshops on management tools and presents different models of how research is organized and managed in the US, how technology is transferred from public research institutions to the private sector, how new technology companies get started and grow, and how public research establishments can promote economic development.

Enrollment is limited to 20 participants in order to assure maximum dialogue between participants and presenters.

Course Content

Participants will learn about:

  • different models of research organization
  • public-private research partnerships
  • management tools that contribute to successful research programs
  • helping scientists turn experimental results into marketable technologies
  • patenting, marketing, and licensing new technologies
  • Graphic illustration of DNAstarting and running a high-tech research park
  • creating and nurturing new high-tech companies
  • raising venture capital for new high-tech companies
  • economic development strategies based on high technology
  • managing new high-tech companies.


Past programs have included visits to and meetings with:

  • scientists on the cutting edge of biotechnology, information technology, engineering, and other fields
  • senior research officers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • staff from University Industry Relations, which facilitates research partnerships between UW-Madison faculty and the private sector
  • directors of WARF, the most successful university technology transfer program in the US
  • CEOs of new high-tech companies
  • the CEO of the award-winning UW-Research Park
  • the CEO of a venture capital firm
  • leaders of the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago
  • experts in strategic planning, human resource management, and continuous quality improvement.


Participants will share experiences with other research leaders in structured discussion groups and informal interactions.

Participants are housed at the edge of campus in the University of Wisconsin's Lowell Hall, a modern hotel adjacent to beautiful Lake Mendota with easy access to swimming , boating, and jogging. The course schedule provides for a day of shopping and sightseeing in downtown Chicago.
