Moodle, a Course Management System Option

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has entered into a collaboration with the College of Engineering (CoE) to make Moodle, an open-source course management system, available to CALS faculty and staff.

Funded by a 2009-10 Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) grant, a team of trained graduate and undergraduate students will work with faculty/staff instructors to create a Moodle web site for their course, which helps them achieve their objectives for students. The team, based in the College of Engineering, works to efficiently address instructors’ teaching goals and challenges, sharing solutions across CALS, CoE , Intro Bio 151/152, Biocore, and selected introductory courses in Chemistry and Physics. The team has developed materials to help instructors use Moodle effectively in their courses.

Also funded by the 2009-10 TEL grant, select courses in Intro Bio 151/152, Biocore, Chemistry, Horticulture, and Physics are participating in the development and implementation-testing of a new tool, Feedback Manager. Feedback Manager enables instructors to ask open-ended questions and provide semi-personalized feedback, all on-line. The basics of Feedback Manager were originally developed through a 2008-9 TEL grant to CALS. The Feedback Manager development team works together with the Engineering-based team to make this tool and supporting materials available to all Moodle users.
