Tuition Remission
All proposals for new grant and contract funding must include a tuition remission surcharge of $8,000 per year for each Program/Project Assistant (PA) and Research Assistant (RA) eligible for tuition remission, regardless of the percent of appointment. It is advised to use $4000 if the PA/RA will be appointed for 1 semester only. If the PA/RA is appointed for 2 semesters or 2 semesters plus summer session, use $8000. The main concern is that all awards be able to cover their proposed direct costs.
The Standard Budget Spreadsheet (available here) has been Revised to calculate the new tuition remission flat fee. After the "year 5 salaries" tab is a NEW "tuition remission" tab, where you have to enter the number of RA's and/or PA's per year in order for the calculations to work properly.
Note that there is no change in tuition remission (fixed dollar amount or percentage) being exempt from indirect costs using the modified total direct costs (MTDC) base. It's not permitted per A-21 section G.2.
