Advanced Placement Program

Over one-half of UW-Madison new freshmen enter with credits earned through the Advanced Placement program of courses offered under the auspices of the College Board (Educational Testing Service) in Princeton, New Jersey.

The courses are taught by high school teachers using a standardized curriculum. The curriculum for each course is developed by a national panel of university faculty and high school teachers. High school students who complete an AP course take a national examination that is prepared and graded by panels of university faculty and high school teachers. Students receive a score for the exams that are equivalent to campus courses. (The UW AP Policy explains which AP courses translate to university credits.)

UW-Madison offers a special Advanced Placement Institute for teachers every summer. UW-Madison faculty help teachers understand the curricular expectations and offer pedagogical advice. CALS faculty have taught summer courses for AP Biology and AP Economics.
