The world is an ever changing place, and there is a need in our society to recognize and embrace the concept that this generation of students will create the face of the future. The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences recognizes the importance of preparing these students to have a positive impact by providing a quality educational and social experience.
CALS also understands that this “face of the future” will embody the growing ethnic and cultural diversity in our society, and we embrace the opportunity of serving students from many different backgrounds.
This effort includes:
Students will have the opportunity to work with a faculty advisor, which creates more interaction with the people who will be instrumental in providing inroads for career opportunities and internships, as well as lab and field research experiences. This is a unique structure at UW-Madison as only CALS utilizes faculty members as academic advisors. Additionally, campus services such as TRIO and GUTS are available for student support. The Assistant Dean for Minority Affairs will provide leadership in connecting students to the various resources in the College and on campus and will work with faculty advisors to assist in the assessment of needs for students of color. The Assistant Dean for Minority Affairs will also advise the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) student organization
MANRRS is a national society organized for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. This student organization is open to all undergraduate and graduate students interested in increasing the number of students studying the life sciences, agriculture, and related fields, developing leadership qualities, and learning about opportunities for recruitment and placement of underrepresented minorities in professional positions.
The CALS chapter of MANRRS is active and meets once per month at the Multicultural Student Center. For more information regarding MANRRS, contact chapter President Lucinda Hagge (hagge@wisc.edu).
For more information or assistance, please contact Tom Browne, the assistant dean for minority affairs at tbrowne@cals.wisc.edu or call 608-262-3288.
