From its beginning in 1990, Summer Science Institute (SSI) has enriched the lives and learning of high potential minority and underserved high school students from Wisconsin and across the country. Each summer, students come to the UW-Madison campus to interact with UW faculty, staff and students as they conduct research in the biological sciences.
There is no cost to SSI participants. Room, board, books and materials are provided by the program. Limited funds for travel may be available for students who request assistance. Students who successfully complete the program may apply for one-half elective credit through the Madison Metropolitan School District.
The seven-week residential program provides unique learning opportunities that enhance and complement a student's regular academic year. Students gain an understanding of the nature, application and ethics of biological research through designing and implementing a scientific research project. Skills in writing, reading, mathematics and information technology are taught within the context of biological disciplines to strengthen the total learning experience. PEOPLE, which stands for Pre-college Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence, is an innovative partnership between UW-Madison and public schools in Milwaukee, Racine, Waukesha, Ho-Chunk Nation and Madison.
Designed for African American, American Indian, Asian American (with emphasis on Southeast Asian American), Hispanic/Latino and disadvantaged students, the program was founded in 1999 as a way for the university to increase diversity and identify students with strong academic potential.
Students participate in year-round sessions at home and at summer sessions at UW-Madison, focusing on academic skills, college classroom experience, campus orientation and cultural enrichment activities. Upon high school graduation, PEOPLE students accepted at UW-Madison are eligible for a five-year tuition grant.
CALS provides two tuition scholarships each year for PEOPLE students. Students in the PEOPLE program, admitted to UW-Madison in a CALS academic program must apply for the 'new student' scholarships by visiting the CALS website.
