Honors Eligiblity

Who may apply?

New Freshmen may apply for admission to the program if they meet at least one of the following:

  • In the upper 10% of their high school graduating class
  • ACT score of 28 or higher
  • SAT score of at least 1240

However, highly motivated entering students can apply for admission to the program in the absence of these requirements by a letter to the Chair of the CALS Honors and Undergraduate Research Committee in 116 Agriculture Hall, explaining why they should be in the program. Transfer and continuing students must have a UW Madison cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 to apply.

How do you apply?

Apply to the program online or pick up an application at the CALS Office of Academic Student Affairs in Room 116 of Agricultural Hall. Applications are accepted at any time.

How do you get accepted?

Your completed application is first reviewed by the Office of Academic Student Affairs to determine if you meet the basic eligibility criteria. If you meet those criteria, your application is recommended to the Honors Program Committee for action. All applicants will receive a letter from the Academic Student Affairs Office notifying them of the decision. The letter also outlines the next steps for students to take.

The CALS Honors program offers three different paths to earn an Honors degree designation. For all three, it is highly recommended that students initiate the programs in their freshman year, though later admission can be discussed with the CALS Academic Student Affairs office in Room 116 Agriculture Hall (608-262-3003, asa@cals.wisc.edu).

All of the following options require admission to the CALS Honors Program. All of the options also are completed with the guidance of a faculty advisor and in connection with the students academic department.
