Honors in the Major in Animal Sciences/Poultry Science is an undergraduate program designed for students who desire a more challenging academic program leading to a degree with the designation With Honors. The program has a prescribed 20 Cr. requirement of Honors or Equivalent courses. In addition to these 20 course work credits a Senior Honors Thesis of 4-6 credits of An Sci 681/682 is required.
Candidates for honors must transmit copies of their Senior Honors Theses to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and must present their work orally at the Spring CALS Research Forum.
To participate in the Honors in the Major Program a student must be admitted to the CALS Honors Degree Program. Freshman may enter the Honors Program if they graduated in the upper 10% of the High School graduating class, with an ACT score of 28 or an SAT score of 1240 or a GPA of 3.25. Advanced students may be admitted to the CALS Honors Program if their GPA is 3.25 or greater.
Approved 4/13/00 The Department of Animal Sciences provides the following partial list of courses listed in the Time Table with the designation H, !, or % which may be taken for honors.
A variety of departments offer courses that are not flagged in the Timetable as Honors Courses but may also be considered Equivalent to Honors courses for purposes of the degree Honors in the Major-Animal Sciences. A student may propose a series of courses outside the Department of Animal Sciences which meet this criterion to the Undergraduate Affairs Committee of the Animal Sciences Department for approval. Examples are advanced statistics (571, 572) or biochemistry (602), and other courses may come from a variety of departments (Chemistry, Mathematics, Physiology, Agricultural and Applied Economics, Ag. Journalism etc).
The following courses in Animal Sciences are not regularly offered for Honors but can be taken for Honors with approval of the instructor; 301 (4 Cr.), 305 (4 Cr), 311 (3 Cr), 313 (1 Cr), 360 (3 Cr), 434 (3 Cr) and 509 (3 Cr). The Undergraduate Affairs Committee of the Department will determine the additional effort needed for a student to obtain Honors credit for courses offered through the Department.
Progress toward the degree Honors in the Major-Animal Sciences is to be monitored by the Department. This will be done by departmental office personnel, and the advisor or advisory committee. The student must maintain a GPA of 3.25, take 20 credits of Honors or Equivalent courses, present a Senior Honors Thesis and present the results of the study in the Spring CALS Research Forum. The student's thesis advisor is responsible for approving the Senior Honors Thesis.
