Honors in Dietetics or Nutritional Sciences offers students a rigorous but flexible program of study within nutrition and related disciplines. Students must be well-prepared in courses leading into the major field of study and be willing to devote time and energy to a rigorous academic experience in Nutrition.
To earn Honors in Dietetics or Nutritional Sciences, you must first be admitted to the College's Honors Program, and must maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.25. You may apply for admission to the Honors program in Nutrition at any time, but you are strongly advised to apply before the junior year. A departmental adviser monitors progress towards Honors in Dietetics or Nutritional Sciences. The Nutrition field is a broad one, and consequently the Honors program is designed for flexibility in matching diverse student experiences in, for example, Dietetics, Business, Food Science, Clinical Nutrition, Basic Sciences, or Community Nutrition.
To complete the Honors in Dietetics or Nutritional Sciences you must complete all of the following, as detailed below:
- Research (8 credits):
- Junior year/senior summer (no later than): NS 699 (2 cr. minimum).
- Senior year: A senior honors thesis, consisting of NS 681 (3 cr) and NS 682 (3 cr), plus submission of a thesis to your research advisor, to the Associate Dean of Academic Student Affairs, and presentation of the senior honors thesis at the Spring CALS Research Forum.
- Courses that Develop Analytical Techniques (6 credits): This may be accomplished by taking additional courses beyond those required for non-honors, or by substituting advanced courses (marked in boldface) for required courses in the Major, choosing courses from the list below.
- Laboratory Courses: AHABS 500 or 701; Bact 304 (instead of 102) or 324; Biochem 651; Biomolchem 504; Food Sci 310.
- Advanced Statistics: GenBus 303; Stats 333, 371, 541, 542, 571, or 572.
- Advanced Accounting: AcctIS 301 (instead of 300), 302, or 310.
- InterAg 150, 151. (Open to freshmen only)
- Advanced Coursework Relevant to the Student’s Major (14 credits): This may be accomplished by taking additional courses beyond those required for the non-honors, or by substituting advanced courses (marked in boldface) for required courses in the Major, choosing from the list below. Additional advanced courses may be added with the approval of the advisor.
