Honors in the Major in Forest Science is an undergraduate program designed for students who desire a more challenging academic program leading to a degree with the designation “With honors.” This program has a 24 -credit minimum requirement for “Honors or Equivalent” courses. In addition to at least 24 course work credits, a Senior Honors Thesis of 4-6 credits of Forest 681/682 is required.
Candidates for honors must transmit a copy of their Senior Honors Thesis to the Associate Dean for Academic Student Affairs and must present their work orally at the Spring CALS Research Forum.
To participate in the Honors in the Major Program, a student must be admitted to the CALS Honors Degree Program. Incoming freshmen are eligible for admission to the Honors Program if they graduated in the upper 10% of their high school graduating class or had an ACT score of 28 or an SAT score of 1240. Advanced students may be admitted to the CALS Honors Degree Program if their GPA is 3.25 or greater.
The Department of Forest Ecology and Management provides the following partial list of courses, which carry a Timetable designation of “H”, ”!” or ”%,” and which may be taken for Honors:
In addition to completing at least fifteen (15) credits from among the courses listed above, students must also complete at least nine (9) credits of upper-level elective courses of honors or equivalent level chosen in consultation with their academic or Senior Honors Thesis advisor. Due to the diversity of potentially appropriate upper-level courses and the diversity of student research interests (e. g., ecology, economics, policy, genetics, fiber science, etc.), we believe it is inappropriate to designate specific required upper-level courses for the Honors in the Major program. In consultation with their advisor, students may propose a series of courses to the Curriculum Committee of Forest Ecology and Management Department for approval.
Progress toward the degree Honors in the Major-Forest Science will be monitored by the Department. This will be done by the departmental office personnel and the advisor or an advisory committee. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.25, take at least 24 credits of Honors or Equivalent Courses, present a Senior Honors Thesis, and present the results of their study in the Spring CALS Honors Thesis Research Forum. The student's thesis advisor is responsible for approving the Senior Honors Thesis.
