Honors in the Major in Horticulture is an undergraduate program designed for students who desire a more challenging academic program leading to a degree with the designation With Honors. The program has a prescribed 20 credit requirement of Honors or Equivalent courses. This credit requirement is explained in the section Honors Credits below. In addition to these 20 credits, a Senior Honors Thesis of 4-6 credits of Horticulture 681 is required. Candidates for Honors must transmit copies of their Senior Honors Theses to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and must present their work orally at the Spring CALS Research Forum.

To participate in the Honors in the Major Program, a student must be admitted to the CALS Honors Degree Program. Freshman students may enter the Honors Program if they had an ACT score of 28 or an SAT score of 1240, or a GPA of at least 3.25. Advanced students may be admitted to the CALS Honors Program if their GPA is 3.25 or greater.

Honors in the Major in the Department of Horticulture may be accomplished by taking horticulture courses for honors credit. A student may choose to take any Horticulture course for Honors credit with approval from the instructor. In addition to Honors credits for courses in the Department of Horticulture, a variety of departments offer courses that are not listed as ‘honors’ but may be considered as equivalent to honors courses for the purposes of the degree Honors in the Major in Horticulture. Examples of such courses include Statistics 571 and 572, and Biochemistry 621. A student may propose a series of such courses outside of the Department of Horticulture to meet this criterion to the Curriculum Committee of the Department of Horticulture, accompanied by a letter indicating the rationale for the proposed plan of Honors credits.

Progress toward the degree Honors in the Major in Horticulture is to be monitored by the Department of Horticulture. This will be done by departmental office personnel, the academic advisor, and the department’s Curriculum Committee. The student must maintain a GPA of 3.25, complete 20 Honors or Equivalent credits, present a Senior Honors Thesis, and present the results of the study at the Spring CALS Research Forum. The student's thesis advisor is responsible for evaluating and approving the Senior Honors Thesis.
