CALS Housing

CALS operates two residence halls on the UW-Madison campus. Humphrey and Jorns Halls are located at 650 Babcock Drive, less than half a block from Lake Mendota.

Not a part of the UW Residence Halls system, the CALS dorms providing housing for students attending the Farm and Industry Short Course from November to April. Jorns and Humphrey also house 30-50 full-time degree students on a contract basis. Short-term or group housing is also available from April 15 to November 5, and limited space is available other times of the year.

Facilities

Humphrey and Jorns Halls are identical dormitories consisting of three floors each, a bathroom on each floor and a TV lounge on the first floor. Some details about the dorms:

  • Like all UW residence halls, Humphrey and Jorns are smoke-free.
  • Coin-operated laundry facilities are located in Jorns’ basement.
  • Telephones are available in each room, as well as pay phones on the first floor.
  • All rooms consist of bunk beds or a single bed and bunks, two desks, two dressers and three closets.
  • A refrigerator is included with your rent and an additional one may be rented.
  • All rooms are wired for internet access and cable television.
  • Residents on contract must provide their own towels, but will be provided with one clean sheet and pillowcase per week. Pillows and blankets are provided.
  • Custodians clean halls, baths, and lounges but maid service is not available in individual rooms.
  • Vending machines and microwave ovens are on the premises.

Food Service

During most of the year, cafeteria food service is available within a block of the dorms. These facilities are closed during semester and vacation breaks, but several restaurants and Union South are available nearby on University Avenue and Randall Street.

For short-course students

Double and triple rooms are available for students enrolled in the Farm and Industry Short Course.

For full-time students

Rooms may be rented for double occupancy during the school year. Semester and summer contract rates are available. Rates include housing during Thanksgiving recess and spring break.

All students on contract have a food service membership fee included in their rent for food service operations. You decide the dollar amount you wish to put in your food choice account. Most students find $400/semester covers food costs.

2005–2006 Rate: $2188 per person, per semester

For short-term occupants

Rooms may be rented for single, double, or triple occupancy. Daily, weekly, and four-week contracts are available. Guests staying more than four weeks may obtain special rates by signing a contract and paying a $100 damage deposit.

All rental periods of less than six weeks require an entire payment in advance. Charge cards are NOT accepted. Personal checks are accepted from Wisconsin residents only. Non-residents can pay with Travelers’ Checks or cash.

Parking is available adjacent to the dorms for $7/day and $3.50/half-day. Permits may be purchased in Room B111 Jorns Hall when checking in. Parking is free Saturdays and Sundays and from 4:30 p.m.–7 a.m. on weekdays.

Check-in is between 12 noon and 11 p.m. Check-out is 11 a.m. after the evening of your stay. When making your reservation, be sure to indicate your anticipated arrival time. Reservations are held until 11 p.m. the day of your expected arrival. If delayed, please call to change or cancel your reservation. There is a recorded voice message in the voice mail system at (608) 262-2270 after office hours.
