CALS Leadership Certificate

Assessing your progress

Rubrics were developed for each competency to assess the extent to which you have developed your skills and knowledge. Each rubric has a conceptual and a behavioral component. You are expected to learn about a particular competency, practice that competency, and finally, reflect on and integrate theory and your observations and reflections from practice. In the Student Handbook, you will find the rubrics as well as an explanation of the minimum standard.

Become familiar with these rubrics, The Leadership Program Committee will use them to decide when you have met the standard and can be awarded the certificate. Read the rubrics, learn what the minimum standard is, think about how your experiences fit, talk it over with your mentor.

The rubrics are not explained down to minute details for a reason, there is no single recipe for completing the Certificate. The rubrics are interpretable because we wanted to give you the most flexibility possible to meet them. However, the general idea is that to earn higher scores on the rubrics you will need to prove you have thought deeply about the competency and integrate practice, observation, theoretical or intellectual concepts, and self-reflection.

You don't have to make sense of the rubrics alone. In fact, you should ask for a lot of feedback from your mentor and, in consultation with your mentor, decide when you think you are at a “passing” level (i.e., when you can meet the minimum standard). When you think you can meet the standard, that is when you should approach the Leadership Program Committee and ask to be certified. The Leadership Program Committee will review your evidence, consider your mentor's recommendation and make a decision about whether or not you have met the standard. This process will help us maintain a fair and equal standard across all students pursuing the Certificate.
