Don't do anything last minute. Plan ahead — Way ahead. The nature of this certificate (i.e., it is experiential and the learning has to build on itself over time) guarantees that if you wait until the last minute, you probably won't be able to complete it. It will benefit you significantly to plan ahead.
Be strategic. Plan how you will work with your mentor to satisfy the competencies. You can't talk about all the competencies in one meeting. You might try to cover 1-2 a semester or maybe 1 per meeting a couple times per semester. Give your mentor a “heads up” about what you will be coming to talk about and when so they can prepare if they wish. Remember, it is likely to be their first time helping a student through this certification process.
Use your mentor's expertise. Get to know your leadership mentor well. Create opportunities for your mentor to know you well (i.e., keep them updated on what you are doing, visit with them regularly, ask for feedback on your work, etc.).
