CALS faculty and staff identified 3 main areas in which leaders should be competent. These main areas are broken down into 9 more specific competencies, and you can find the specific skills and knowledge you need to acquire are detailed in the Student Handbook. As an overview, the competencies are:
1. Exploring Leadership
2. Gaining Self-Awareness (Personal Leadership Skills & Personal Values)
3. Exploring Personal and Professional Ethics
4. Developing Communication Skills
5. Building Relationships
6. Involving Others
7. Managing the Process
8. Understanding Organizations
9. Improving Communities
Just because the competencies are numbered 1-9, doesnt mean you must learn them in that order. To some extent, they do build off one another and are increasingly sophisticated as you move down the list. However, they are not meant to be learned one at a time or in numeric order.
